I bring to you a message about the current state and near future of our Republic. I represent no political organization. I am not paid, I work alone. This is simply a message from me, to you.
On December 31, 2011, President Obama signed into law the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act. This gives the US military the authority to indefinitely detain anyone, including US citizens on US soil, without charge or evidence under the guise of combating terrorism. Another act, the Stop Online Piracy Act, is making its way through Congress. This act is intended to prevent piracy of copyrighted materials but it contains massive loopholes which lay the basis for politicized censorship of the Internet with the same technology used for Internet censorship in China.
Perhaps you think that these laws will not concern you, or that our government will only use them for “legitimate” purposes. You must not be so naive. Every single time in history that a government has granted themselves the power to imprison and kill without trial and to censor information, these powers have been abused and used against political dissenters. Whatever your feelings towards the “Occupy” movement, images of protesters being gassed and beaten in American streets should serve as a warning about the state’s intentions.
What do you think?
